The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) has announced its prestigious yearly awards, recognizing individuals whose extraordinary actions and community involvement set them apart in the field of law enforcement. The honorees were revealed on June 14, with a spotlight on the heroic acts that took place in 2023 and 2024.
Officer Mike Tschida: A Test of Bravery
This year, St. Paul Police Officer Mike Tschida earned the coveted title of MPPOA Officer of the Year. His commendable service was highlighted during a dangerous incident on December 7, 2023. Responding to a domestic violence call, Officer Tschida faced an armed suspect who attacked a woman. Despite being shot in the ankle, his determination to protect lives did not waver. He engaged the suspect in return fire, showcasing unwavering bravery. MPPOA Executive Director Brian Peters praised Tschida, stating, "His actions saved lives and deserve our deepest respect." This incident exemplifies the selfless efforts of officers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Honoring Officer Luke Kittock's Courage
Another notable honoree, Minneapolis Police Officer Luke Kittock, was recognized as an Honorary Officer of the Year for his extraordinary actions on May 30, 2024. During an ambush that critically injured Officer Jamal Mitchell, Kittock bravely responded to the chaos, despite being injured by shrapnel. Beyond this commendable act, he's also dedicated to improving the lives of the homeless as the First Precinct’s outreach coordinator. Peters remarked, "His selflessness inspires us all."
Officer Ben Bauer: Leadership Under Fire
Officer Ben Bauer, also honored as an MPPOA Honorary Officer of the Year, faced a life-threatening situation on September 6, 2024, while responding to an active shooter. Demonstrating exceptional leadership, Bauer acted decisively to evacuate residents and neutralize the threat posed by the shooter. Peters noted, "His courage under fire prevented a potential tragedy, exemplifying the best of our profession." Such acts of resolve reinforce our appreciation for those on the front lines.
